Interview With Dominic Turner of BooKoo Clothing

Dallas, Texas based brand BooKoo Clothing was founded by two high school friends, Dominic Turner and Duane Lumar. The word “BooKoo” originates from the french Term “Beaucoup”, meaning plenty, a lot, in abundance of. BooKoo stands to illustrate designs that cater to all cultures and lifestyle. While the goal is to give it’s customers a sense of ‘freshness’ no matter the occasion. We had the change to link up with 1/2 of Bookoo Clothing, Dominic Turner.

Tell us about BooKoo Clothing.

BooKoo Clothing is a new and upcoming brand that will be introduced this Fall 09 Season. BooKoo’s originality will set apart from the rest. BooKoo is ‘streetwear’ that you will want to have on because it will fit your lifestyle and culture. Its DOPE. Why? Because you have never seen designs that will intrigue and cater to wide variety audience. BooKoo is that brand that you could wear no matter if you were just chillin’ out, going to the beach, going to school, skating doing ‘Caballerialsʼ, BMX riding, hitting ‘FAT AIR’, or you may just be looking to get FRESH. We got you! BooKoo knows what you want. BooKoo is you!

What made you decide to step into clothing ?

Really…We never planned to step into the fashion industry. It kind of “found us.” Knowing and following all the trends, we have always had a strong fashion ‘sense’ so it was quite natural for us to fit into the industry. It’s funny because both of us would always compete and try to ‘Out-Do’ each other by being the ‘FRESH-EST’ with the kicks and gear until we were like “Dude lets start our own trend”. We would start coming up with ‘Fresh’ ideas to put onto T-shirts and next thing it became a daily routine to do. It was more of a hobby than anything. It was fun. It wasn’t a decision…it just happened.

When was BooKoo Clothing established ?

BooKoo Clothing Co. was founded and EST. in 2008.

What’s a day like for you ?

Since, we are building the foundation of an empire, its more of getting those small details in order to get the company off of the ground. It is never the same thing day -in and day out. We are constantly working to make sure we can have a successful release. Then the rest will be history.

What do you feel are the most important skills for a fashion designer to have/develop ?

The obvious, Be CREATIVE , Original, and Innovative. It’s art…it’s your craft…be GREAT at what you do by constantly learning new ways to expand and build on your current skills.

What type of roadblocks have you ran into while running your own clothing line?

What haven’t we run into?!? We just learned to be resilient. There is always something that can alter the primary plan. Whether its getting the print company to get the job done right or making sure we can fund certain endeavors we are always running into something. Adversity is something we embrace because it is something that’s much needed to test our ability. Kobe Bryant is not who he is today by not overcoming challenges he faced on and off the court. We have a game plan and are prepared to take on any obstacle to dare come our way.

Are all your designs created by you ?

Yes and NO. We come up with the ideas and sit with our designer and he turns it all into art. We are a great team with great chemistry…We are like the Big Trio in Boston…KG, Ray, and Pierce…We all have our own style and identity, but we can all contribute to come up with the ‘winning’ design.

How do you typically start a new shirt designs ?

Inspiration. Sketch. Master.

Tell us about your new releases.

Our new releases include a few designs we came up with since first the line which consists of 4 designs. Of course we have two variations of the logo that will be presented along with the others. My favorite shirt was the “voulez” tee which is printed in all french with a female image contrasted in the background.

Will these be your only release for this season or can we expect more from BooKoo Clothing ?

We have so much in store for the Spring 2010 line. Until then these will be the designs to launch us off the ground.

Can we expect more then just t-shirts in the future ?

Yes! Definitely be on the look out for us! Next, we are going to produce some custom fitted baseball caps with the ‘BooKoo’ infinite logo stitched in. Of course during winter we will have crew neck sweatshirts and hoodies. After that, we do have other plans and ideas to produce other products.

Do you have any advice you can give to aspiring designers?

Persistency and Originality is key. Have an open mind and ear, as your inspiration is closer than you think. ‘Do you and be yourself’. Do not duplicate or replicate other’s work. Develop your own identity. Do the unthinkable, as no one else will. Think you will be the BEST!!!
